Can you grow Alocasia plants in an apartment or home office?

Yes, Alocasias can grow indoors when you provide bright indirect light, steady warmth, and suitable humidity. A desk or shelf near a bright window may suit a compact variety, provided it has space to grow and is protected from harsh sun and air-conditioning drafts. A dim office corner is not a good substitute for the light these tropical plants need.

What care do Alocasia houseplants need?

Use an airy, well-draining potting mix and water according to how quickly it dries, keeping roots from sitting in standing water. Adjust watering as growth slows in cooler or darker conditions. Jewel varieties particularly appreciate humid air, and Alocasias generally require more consistent attention than drought-tolerant beginner houseplants.

Are Alocasia plants pet-safe?

No. Alocasias contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth if chewed. Keep them away from cats, dogs, and young children, and choose a different plant if you need a pet-safe indoor houseplant.
