Alocasia Care Guide
Alocasias, also known as Elephant Ear plants, are stunning tropical houseplants prized for their bold, dramatic foliage. With the right care, they can thrive indoors and make a striking statement in any space.
Light
Alocasias prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch their leaves. A spot near an east or north-facing window is ideal.
Watering
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Alocasias like consistent moisture but are sensitive to overwatering — always ensure your pot has good drainage. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Humidity
These tropical plants love humidity. Aim for 60% or higher. Use a humidifier, pebble tray with water, or group plants together to boost moisture levels.
Temperature
Keep your Alocasia in temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 60°F.
Soil
Use a well-draining, airy potting mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well to prevent root rot.
Fertilizing
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Hold off on fertilizing in fall and winter.
Common Issues
Yellow leaves: Usually a sign of overwatering or low humidity. Brown leaf tips: Often caused by dry air or inconsistent watering. Drooping leaves: Check soil moisture — either too dry or too wet.
Propagation
Alocasias are best propagated by dividing offsets (pups) from the base of the mother plant during repotting in spring.
