The Philodendron Summer Glory is a showstopper with a twist. New leaves emerge in a warm, blush salmon-pink before transitioning to rich green with deep red undersides — a color journey that plays out on every single new leaf. But what really sets it apart from the rest of the Philodendron family is how it grows: the Summer Glory is a crawler, not a climber. It spreads horizontally, creeping outward in a lush, low-growing mound that's unlike anything else in a typical plant collection.

Fun fact: The Summer Glory is a hybrid of Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron mccolleyi 'Red' — two species known for their velvety texture and warm coloration. The gloriosum parent is famous for its large, heart-shaped, velvety leaves and its creeping growth habit, and the Summer Glory inherits both. The result is a plant with the color drama of the mccolleyi line and the spreading, terrestrial growth style of the gloriosum — a genuinely unique combination that rewards a wide, shallow pot and plenty of room to roam.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal — it keeps the salmon-pink new leaves most vivid and growth vigorous. It tolerates medium light but growth will slow. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings — this plant prefers to dry out a bit more than most Philodendrons. Overwatering is the most common mistake. Always use a pot with drainage holes.
  • Humidity: Thrives in 50–70% humidity. A humidifier nearby makes a real difference. It adapts to average household levels but rewards higher humidity with faster, lusher growth.
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 65°F–80°F (18°C–27°C). Keep away from cold drafts and AC vents.
  • Soil: Use a very chunky, well-draining aroid mix — orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil is ideal. This plant's roots need excellent aeration.
  • Potting: Because it's a crawler, choose a wide, shallow pot rather than a deep one. This gives the rhizome room to spread and the plant room to do what it does naturally.
  • Fertilizer: Feed every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Skip in fall and winter.
  • Pests: Check periodically for spider mites and thrips, especially during watering. Treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Pro Tip: Don't try to make this plant climb — it won't, and it doesn't need to. Give it a wide, low planter and let it spread naturally. It looks stunning in a wide ceramic bowl or a long rectangular planter where it can creep and fill in over time.

Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
