The Homalomena Emerald Gem is exactly what its name promises — a gem. Its deep, waxy, spade-shaped leaves are a rich, saturated emerald green that holds its color year-round without fading, browning, or demanding constant attention. The foliage has a glossy, almost lacquered quality that makes it look perpetually fresh, and the compact, upright clumping habit keeps it tidy and full without sprawling. It's the kind of plant that looks expensive and effortless at the same time.
Native to the tropical forests of South and Southeast Asia, Homalomena is a genus of aroids closely related to Philodendron and Spathiphyllum. The Emerald Gem is one of the most popular cultivars in the genus for good reason — it's one of the best low-light aroids available as a houseplant, thriving in conditions where most tropicals struggle, and it's significantly more tolerant of inconsistent watering than its Philodendron cousins. It also carries a subtle, pleasant fragrance from its leaves — a little-known trait that makes it even more rewarding up close.
🌿 Fun Facts
Homalomena Emerald Gem is sometimes sold under the name Queen of Hearts or Shield Plant — both references to the broad, heart-to-shield-shaped leaves that are characteristic of the genus.
Unlike most aroids, Homalomena produce a mild, spicy-sweet fragrance from their leaves when gently touched — a trait that's almost unique in the houseplant world and makes them a genuinely sensory experience.
Homalomena are among the most underappreciated aroids in the houseplant market — they offer Philodendron-level ease with better low-light performance, yet remain far less common in mainstream plant shops.
💡 Pro Tips
Light: Low to medium indirect light is ideal — one of its best traits. It handles genuinely dim conditions better than most aroids without losing its deep green color.
Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy. It's more tolerant of slight underwatering than overwatering — good drainage is essential.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts to average household conditions better than many tropicals. A pebble tray or occasional misting helps.
Temperature: Happiest between 65–85°F. Keep away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents.
Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.
Perfect for: Low-light rooms, shelves, desks, and anyone looking for a lush, glossy aroid houseplant that delivers year-round tropical beauty with minimal fuss.

Alocasia Variegated Frydek Brandie Perry
The plant did not arrive in great shape. However, it was an alocasia and I did not add insulation so this is not on the seller (and we all know alocasia does not travel well anddddd they come back)
From start to finish the transaction was amazing. They gave me a discount for my next order even though I didn't ask for one because I knew the risks, and they continued to answer my questions and help me! Will def order again from them and would encourage others to as well!
