How to Propagate Anthurium: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Anthurium is one of the most rewarding houseplants you can grow — bold waxy spathes, glossy heart-shaped leaves, and the ability to bloom nearly year-round indoors. Once you have a thriving plant, propagating it is one of the most satisfying things you can do as a plant parent. You get more plants for free, you can share them with friends, and you get to watch the whole life cycle play out from a single cutting or offset.

Can You Propagate Anthurium?

Yes — but Anthurium propagates differently than most popular houseplants. Unlike pothos or philodendron, which root easily from a simple stem cutting placed in water, Anthurium is a bit more particular. It propagates best through division (separating offsets that already have their own roots) or through stem cuttings with a node rooted in either soil or water. Simple leaf cuttings without a node will not produce a new plant.

The good news: once you understand what the plant needs, propagation is very achievable even for beginners. Patience is the most important ingredient — Anthurium roots and establishes more slowly than most aroids, but the results are absolutely worth it.

What You'll Need (For All Methods)

  • A healthy, mature Anthurium (stressed or sick plants should not be propagated)
  • Sterilized scissors or a sharp knife — sterilize with rubbing alcohol before every cut
  • Clean pots with drainage holes
  • Fresh chunky aroid mix (for soil propagation)
  • A clear glass or jar (for water propagation)
  • Rooting hormone powder or gel (optional but helpful)
  • Sphagnum moss (optional — great for humidity tenting)
  • A clear plastic bag or humidity dome

Method 1: Division (Best for Beginners)

Division is the most reliable and beginner-friendly way to propagate Anthurium. Instead of waiting for a cutting to develop roots, you're separating an offset that already has its own established root system. Success rates are much higher than cuttings, and the new plant establishes faster.

When to Divide

The best time to divide is spring through early summer during the active growing season. The plant is producing new growth and has the energy to recover quickly. Avoid dividing in fall or winter when growth slows, or when the plant is stressed, recently repotted, or actively blooming.

Step 1 — Water 24 Hours Before

Lightly water your Anthurium the day before you plan to divide. Hydrated roots are more flexible and far less likely to snap during separation. Dry, brittle roots break easily and increase stress on the plant.

Step 2 — Remove from the Pot

Gently tip the plant sideways and ease it out of its pot. Don't yank — if it's stuck, run a butter knife or chopstick around the inside edge of the pot to loosen the root ball. Once out, shake or gently brush away excess soil so you can see the root structure clearly.

Step 3 — Find the Offsets

Look at the base of the plant for offshoots — smaller stems or rosettes growing alongside the main plant. Each offset needs to have at least 2–3 of its own roots to survive independently. If an offset is still attached with no visible roots of its own, leave it alone and let it develop further before separating.

Step 4 — Separate the Offset

Using your sterilized scissors or knife, cut the offset away from the mother plant at the base. Make a clean, decisive cut — don't saw back and forth or tear, as ragged cuts are slower to heal and more prone to infection. If the roots are tangled, gently tease them apart with your fingers rather than cutting through them.

Step 5 — Dust with Rooting Hormone (Optional)

Lightly dust the cut end of the offset with rooting hormone powder. This isn't strictly necessary since the offset already has roots, but it can help stimulate faster root development and reduce the risk of rot at the cut site.

Step 6 — Let It Callous

Set the offset in a warm, shaded spot for 30–60 minutes to let the cut end dry slightly and begin to callous over. This simple step significantly reduces the risk of rot once it's in soil.

Step 7 — Pot It Up

Plant the offset in a small pot with fresh aroid mix. Choose a pot that's snug — just big enough to fit the roots comfortably. Don't overpot. An oversized pot holds too much moisture and can cause root rot before the plant is established enough to handle it.

Bury the roots and the base of the stem, but keep the leaves above the soil line. Water lightly — just enough to settle the soil around the roots — and place in bright indirect light.

Step 8 — Aftercare

For the first 2–4 weeks, your goal is to keep the offset stable and stress-free while it settles in. Keep humidity high — drape a clear plastic bag loosely over the plant to create a humidity tent, or place it in a naturally humid spot like a bathroom. Keep it out of direct sun. Water sparingly — only when the top inch of soil is dry.

Once you see new leaf growth emerging, the offset has established successfully. At that point you can remove the humidity tent and begin caring for it like a mature Anthurium.

Method 2: Stem Cutting Rooted in Soil

If your Anthurium has a long, leggy stem — especially one with aerial roots already forming — you can propagate it via stem cutting rooted directly in soil. This method takes longer than division but works well for plants that have grown tall and bare at the base.

What to Look For

You need a stem section with at least one node — the bump or joint on the stem where a leaf, root, or new growth emerges. A node is non-negotiable: without one, the cutting cannot produce roots or new growth. Aerial roots already present on the stem are a bonus — they'll establish even faster once in soil.

Step 1 — Take the Cutting

Using sterilized scissors or a knife, cut the stem just below a node. Leave at least 1–2 inches of stem below the node. If there are leaves on the cutting, keep 1–2 healthy leaves and remove any others to reduce the energy demand on the unrooted cutting.

Step 2 — Let It Callous

Set the cutting aside in a warm, shaded spot for 1–2 hours to let the cut end callous over. Don't skip this step — a fresh cut placed directly into moist soil is much more vulnerable to rot.

Step 3 — Apply Rooting Hormone

Dip or dust the cut end and the node area with rooting hormone. This step is more important for stem cuttings than for division, as the cutting has no existing roots and needs to generate them from scratch.

Step 4 — Plant in Aroid Mix

Fill a small pot with fresh, lightly moistened aroid mix. Make a hole in the center with a pencil or chopstick and insert the cutting so the node is buried just below the soil surface. Firm the soil gently around the stem to hold it upright.

If the cutting has aerial roots, bury those too — they'll transition to soil roots and help anchor and feed the cutting faster.

Step 5 — Create a Humidity Tent

Place a clear plastic bag loosely over the cutting or use a humidity dome. This keeps humidity high around the cutting while it works on producing roots, reducing water loss through the leaves. Keep the tent on for the first 3–4 weeks, opening it briefly every few days to allow fresh air circulation and prevent mold.

Step 6 — Wait and Watch

Place the cutting in bright indirect light and be patient. Anthurium is slower to root than most aroids — expect 4–8 weeks before you see signs of establishment. Don't tug on the cutting to test for roots — this disturbs the delicate new root hairs. Instead, watch for new leaf growth, which is the clearest sign that roots have formed and the cutting is established.

Water very sparingly during this period — just enough to keep the mix from completely drying out. Overwatering an unrooted cutting is the fastest way to lose it to rot.

Method 3: Water Propagation

Water propagation is a popular method because it lets you watch the roots develop in real time — which is incredibly satisfying and also lets you monitor root health closely. Anthurium can be propagated in water successfully, though it does require a transition period when moving to soil.

Step 1 — Prepare Your Cutting

Take a stem cutting with at least one node, exactly as described in Method 2. Let it callous for 1–2 hours before placing it in water. Apply rooting hormone gel (not powder — gel works better for water propagation) to the node and cut end.

Step 2 — Set Up Your Water Vessel

Use a clear glass or jar so you can monitor root development. Fill with clean room-temperature water — filtered or distilled is best. Tap water is fine if you let it sit out overnight to off-gas chlorine.

Position the cutting so the node is submerged but the leaves are above the waterline. You can use toothpicks, a piece of mesh, or simply prop the cutting against the rim of the jar to hold it at the right height.

Step 3 — Change the Water Regularly

Change the water every 5–7 days to keep it fresh and oxygenated and prevent bacterial buildup. When you change the water, rinse the jar and the stem gently. If you notice any sliminess on the stem, that's bacterial growth — rinse it off and change the water immediately.

Keep the jar in bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which warms the water and promotes algae and bacterial growth. A dark-colored jar can help reduce algae if it becomes a problem.

Step 4 — Watch for Roots

Anthurium roots in water typically begin to appear within 3–6 weeks. They'll emerge from the node as thin white threads that gradually thicken. Wait until the roots are at least 1–2 inches long before transitioning to soil — longer roots establish more successfully.

Step 5 — Transition to Soil

This is the most critical step in water propagation. Water roots and soil roots are structurally different — water roots are adapted to a low-oxygen, high-moisture environment, while soil roots need to handle air pockets and variable moisture. Moving too fast can shock the plant.

To transition successfully:

  • Prepare a small pot with lightly moistened aroid mix
  • Gently plant the cutting, burying the water roots carefully without breaking them
  • Water lightly and place in bright indirect light
  • Keep humidity high with a plastic bag tent for the first 2–3 weeks while the roots adapt
  • Water more frequently than you normally would for the first few weeks — the roots need time to adjust to extracting moisture from soil rather than being submerged in it
  • Gradually reduce watering frequency over 3–4 weeks as the roots adapt

Expect some leaf droop or stress during the transition — this is normal. As long as the stem is firm and not rotting, the plant is adjusting. New leaf growth is the sign that the transition is complete.

Common Propagation Mistakes to Avoid

No node on the cutting — a cutting without a node cannot produce roots or new growth. Always confirm there's at least one node before cutting.

Skipping the callous step — placing a fresh cut directly into moist soil or water dramatically increases rot risk. Always let the cut end dry for at least 30–60 minutes.

Overwatering after propagation — new cuttings and divisions are extremely vulnerable to rot. Water sparingly until established.

Dividing too aggressively — a larger, fuller plant blooms better than two stressed small ones. Only divide when the plant is genuinely crowded and offsets have their own roots.

Low humidity during establishment — Anthurium needs high humidity to thrive, especially when recovering from propagation. Always use a humidity tent for the first few weeks.

Too much direct sun — bright indirect light only during establishment. Direct sun stresses a newly propagated plant fast and can cause irreversible leaf damage.

Impatience — Anthurium is slower than most aroids. Don't tug on cuttings to test for roots, don't repot too soon, and don't give up if nothing seems to be happening for the first few weeks. Give it time.

After Your New Plant Is Established

Once your propagated Anthurium has settled in and is producing new growth, care for it exactly like a mature plant. It may take a full growing season before it's large enough to bloom, but with the right conditions it will get there.
