Brown Leaf Tips on Houseplants: Causes & How to Fix Them
Share
Brown leaf tips are one of the most common complaints among houseplant owners. While they're rarely fatal, they're a sign your plant is stressed. Here's how to identify the cause and fix it.
1. Low Humidity (Most Common Cause)
Signs: Brown, crispy tips on tropical plants like Calathea, Ferns, Alocasia, or Dracaena. Tips are dry and papery.
Fix: Increase humidity around your plant. Use a humidifier, place the pot on a pebble tray with water, or group plants together. Most tropicals thrive at 50-70% humidity.
2. Inconsistent Watering
Signs: Brown tips alongside soil that swings between bone dry and waterlogged.
Fix: Establish a consistent watering routine. Check soil moisture before watering — water when the top 1-2 inches are dry. Use a moisture meter for accuracy.
3. Fluoride or Salt Buildup in Soil
Signs: Brown tips that worsen over time, white crusty deposits on the soil surface or pot edges.
Fix: Flush the soil thoroughly with water to leach out mineral buildup. Switch to filtered, distilled, or rainwater if you're using tap water high in fluoride or chlorine. Spider Plants and Dracaenas are especially sensitive to fluoride.
4. Overfertilizing
Signs: Brown tips after fertilizing, white salt crust on soil, overall leaf burn.
Fix: Flush the soil with water to remove excess fertilizer. Reduce fertilizing frequency — most houseplants only need feeding every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
5. Underwatering
Signs: Brown tips alongside dry, pulling-away-from-pot soil. Leaves may also feel thin or curl.
Fix: Water more consistently. For severely dry plants, try bottom watering to ensure even moisture absorption.
6. Cold Drafts or Temperature Stress
Signs: Brown tips on leaves closest to a window, door, or air vent.
Fix: Move the plant away from cold drafts and temperature extremes. Keep tropical plants away from air conditioning vents.
Can You Fix Brown Tips?
Unfortunately, brown tips don't reverse — once a leaf tip turns brown, it stays brown. However, you can trim the brown tips with clean scissors (cut at a slight angle to mimic the natural leaf shape) and address the underlying cause to prevent further browning.
Quick Fix Checklist
- Tropical plant with crispy tips? → Boost humidity
- White crust on soil? → Flush soil, switch to filtered water
- Recently fertilized? → Flush and reduce feeding
- Near a vent or window? → Move the plant
- Soil swinging dry to wet? → Establish a watering routine
