Syngonium Care Guide: How to Grow & Care for Arrowhead Plants

About Syngonium (Arrowhead Plant)

Syngonium, commonly known as the Arrowhead Plant, is a fast-growing tropical vine prized for its distinctive arrow-shaped leaves and incredible range of colors — from classic green to pink, burgundy, cream, and variegated forms. Native to Central and South America, Syngonium is adaptable, forgiving, and one of the best choices for beginner plant parents. It can be grown as a compact bushy plant or trained to climb a moss pole for a more dramatic look.

Light Requirements

Syngonium thrives in bright to medium indirect light. Variegated and pink varieties need more light to maintain their color, while green varieties are more tolerant of lower light. Avoid direct sunlight which scorches and bleaches the foliage. A spot near a bright window with filtered light is ideal.

Watering

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Syngonium prefers consistently moist soil but will not tolerate waterlogging — always ensure good drainage. In winter, reduce watering frequency as growth slows. Yellowing leaves are usually a sign of overwatering; wilting or crispy edges indicate underwatering.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive tropical potting mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and coco coir works excellently. Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots begin to crowd the pot. Syngonium grows quickly and may need repotting more frequently during active growth periods.

Temperature & Humidity

Syngonium prefers temperatures between 60–85°F (15–29°C) and should be kept away from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. It appreciates moderate to high humidity — aim for 40–60% or higher. Mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier for best results.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce to monthly in fall and stop fertilizing in winter. Syngonium are moderate feeders — regular feeding during the growing season encourages lush, colorful growth.

Training & Pruning

Syngonium naturally wants to vine and climb as it matures. You can keep it compact by regularly pinching back new growth, or train it up a moss pole or trellis for a more dramatic display. Pruning also encourages bushier growth and more vibrant leaf coloring on variegated varieties.

Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves: Usually overwatering or poor drainage. Let soil dry out more between waterings.
  • Pale or washed-out color: Too much direct sun or insufficient light for variegated varieties.
  • Leggy growth: Insufficient light. Move to a brighter spot or prune back to encourage bushier growth.
  • Spider mites: Common in dry conditions. Increase humidity and treat with neem oil if needed.

Popular Syngonium Varieties

  • Syngonium 'Neon Robusta' — vibrant pink, one of the most popular varieties
  • Syngonium 'White Butterfly' — soft green and white variegation
  • Syngonium 'Pink Allusion' — delicate pink veining on green leaves
  • Syngonium podophyllum — classic green arrowhead, most tolerant of low light
