Scindapsus Care Guide
Scindapsus plants, often called satin pothos or silver pothos, are elegant trailing plants with velvety, silver-mottled leaves. They're closely related to pothos but have a distinct, luxurious appearance that makes them a favorite among collectors.
Light
Scindapsus prefers medium to bright indirect light. The silver variegation is most vivid in brighter conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can bleach the leaves.
Watering
Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Scindapsus is more drought-tolerant than it looks — it's better to underwater than overwater. Reduce watering in winter.
Humidity
Average household humidity is fine, but higher humidity (50%+) encourages larger, more vibrant leaves. A pebble tray or humidifier nearby is beneficial.
Temperature
Keep temperatures between 60–85°F (15–29°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.
Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining potting mix. Adding perlite to standard potting soil improves drainage and prevents root rot. Repot every 1–2 years.
Fertilizing
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. No feeding needed in fall and winter.
Common Issues
- Fading silver pattern: Move to a brighter location.
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering — let soil dry more between waterings.
- Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Propagation
Propagate easily from stem cuttings with at least one node. Place in water or moist soil and roots will develop within 2–4 weeks.
