Pothos Care Guide
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is one of the most popular and forgiving houseplants around. With trailing vines and heart-shaped leaves in shades of green, gold, and variegated patterns, pothos thrives in a wide range of conditions.
Light
Pothos adapts to a wide range of light conditions — from low light to bright indirect light. Variegated varieties like Golden Pothos and Marble Queen need more light to maintain their patterns. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
Watering
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Pothos tolerates some drought but will droop when thirsty — a helpful reminder! Avoid overwatering, which leads to root rot.
Humidity
Pothos is adaptable to average household humidity but appreciates higher levels. No special humidity requirements needed.
Temperature
Thrives in temperatures between 60–85°F (15–29°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F.
Soil & Potting
Use a standard well-draining potting mix. Repot every 1–2 years or when roots start escaping the drainage holes.
Fertilizing
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Pothos are light feeders — avoid over-fertilizing.
Common Issues
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering or too little light.
- Brown tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.
- Loss of variegation: Move to a brighter spot.
- Leggy vines: Prune regularly to encourage bushier growth.
Propagation
Pothos is one of the easiest plants to propagate. Cut a stem just below a node, place in water, and roots will appear within 1–3 weeks. Transfer to soil once roots are 1–2 inches long.
