Homalomena Care Guide: How to Grow & Care for Homalomena Plants

About Homalomena
Homalomena is an underrated gem in the tropical houseplant world — a close relative of Philodendron and Spathiphyllum that offers lush, heart-shaped foliage in deep greens and rich burgundy tones. Native to tropical Asia and South America, Homalomena is prized for its tolerance of low light and its ability to thrive in conditions that challenge many other tropicals. It's an excellent choice for darker corners, offices, and spaces where other plants struggle.
Light Requirements
One of Homalomena's greatest strengths is its tolerance of low to medium light. It can survive in quite dim conditions while maintaining healthy growth — making it one of the best choices for offices and rooms with limited natural light. However, it will grow faster and produce more vibrant foliage in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which scorches the leaves.
Watering
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Homalomena prefers consistently moist soil but is sensitive to overwatering — always ensure good drainage. In lower light conditions, the soil dries out more slowly, so adjust watering frequency accordingly. Yellow leaves are usually a sign of overwatering; drooping indicates underwatering.
Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive tropical potting mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and coco coir works well. Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots begin to crowd the pot. Homalomena grows at a moderate pace and doesn't need frequent repotting.
Temperature & Humidity
Homalomena prefers temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C) and should be kept away from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F. It appreciates moderate to high humidity — aim for 50% or higher. Mist regularly or use a pebble tray to maintain moisture around the plant.
Fertilizing
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during spring and summer. Reduce to every 6–8 weeks in fall and stop in winter. Homalomena are moderate feeders — avoid over-fertilizing which can cause leaf burn.
Why Choose Homalomena?
Homalomena is an excellent alternative to Philodendron or Peace Lily for low-light spaces. It's more tolerant of neglect than many tropicals, produces attractive glossy foliage year-round, and is relatively pest-resistant. The burgundy-leaved varieties like Homalomena 'Maggy' add a rich, jewel-toned quality to any interior.
Common Problems
- Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage. Allow soil to dry out more between waterings.
- Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering. Increase humidity and water more regularly.
- Slow growth: Normal in low light. Move to a brighter spot to encourage faster growth.
- Root rot: Caused by overwatering. Ensure excellent drainage and let soil dry between waterings.
Popular Homalomena Varieties

- Homalomena rubescens — glossy green heart-shaped leaves
