Chinese Evergreens (Aglaonema) are stunning, low-maintenance tropical plants with beautifully patterned leaves in shades of green, silver, red, and pink. They're one of the best plants for beginners due to their adaptability and tolerance of neglect.

Light

Chinese Evergreens are highly adaptable to light conditions. Green varieties tolerate low light well, while colorful pink and red varieties need brighter indirect light to maintain their vibrant colors. Avoid direct sunlight, which scorches the leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Chinese Evergreens prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. They're more tolerant of underwatering than overwatering — always ensure good drainage.

Humidity

They prefer moderate to high humidity (50%+) but adapt well to average household conditions. A pebble tray or occasional misting is appreciated.

Temperature

Keep temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Chinese Evergreens are sensitive to cold — avoid temperatures below 55°F and keep away from cold drafts.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining potting mix. A blend of potting soil and perlite works well. Repot every 2 years or when root-bound.

Fertilizing

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.

Common Issues

• Yellow leaves: Overwatering or cold temperatures.
• Brown leaf tips: Low humidity, fluoride in water, or cold drafts.
• Fading color: Move colorful varieties to a brighter spot.
• Pests: Watch for mealybugs and spider mites — treat with neem oil.

Propagation

Propagate by stem cuttings or division during repotting. Stem cuttings root easily in water or moist soil within 3–6 weeks.
