Areca Palm Care Guide

The Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens), also known as the butterfly palm or golden cane palm, is one of the most popular indoor palms. Its feathery, arching fronds bring a tropical, resort-like feel to any space.

Light

Areca palms prefer bright indirect light. They can tolerate some direct morning sun but should be protected from harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the fronds. Insufficient light causes slow growth and yellowing.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, watering when the top inch feels dry. Reduce watering in winter. Areca palms are sensitive to fluoride and salt buildup — use filtered water and flush the soil periodically.

Humidity

Areca palms love humidity (50%+). Brown leaf tips are a common sign of dry air. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or mist the fronds regularly.

Temperature

Keep temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. Areca palms prefer to be slightly root-bound — repot only when roots are visibly escaping the pot, typically every 2–3 years.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a palm-specific or balanced liquid fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause salt buildup and leaf burn.

Common Issues

  • Brown leaf tips: Low humidity, fluoride in water, or salt buildup.
  • Yellow fronds: Overwatering, poor drainage, or insufficient light.
  • Pests: Watch for spider mites, especially in dry conditions — treat with neem oil and increase humidity.

Propagation

Areca palms are propagated by dividing offshoots (pups) from the base of the plant during repotting in spring.
